Service Description
SplitTunnel is a macOS utility that enables per-application VPN routing. It allows you to configure which applications use your VPN connection and which connect directly to the internet.
Important Limitations
- •
SplitTunnel does not provide VPN service — you must have your own VPN provider
- •
Compatibility depends on your VPN provider and configuration
- •
Some applications may not be routable due to macOS system restrictions
- •
Shared system services including, but not limited to, DNS resolution, certificate validation, push notifications, and local network discovery are managed by macOS and are not controlled by SplitTunnel
- •
Some applications use independent helper processes or agents for their network connections, which must be configured separately from the main application
Routing Limitations & User Responsibility
Shared System Services
macOS uses pooled system services that perform network operations on behalf of multiple applications simultaneously. These include, but are not limited to, DNS resolution (mDNSResponder), TLS certificate validation (trustd), Apple Push Notification Service (apsd), background transfer services (nsurlsessiond), local network discovery (Bonjour/mDNS), time synchronization, captive portal detection, and software update mechanisms. SplitTunnel does not modify or control these shared services in order to preserve the stability, security, and functionality of your computer. Traffic generated by these services follows the operating system's default routing path regardless of your per-application routing rules.
Independent Application Processes
Some applications delegate their network connections to independent helper processes or agents that operate under their own identity. Configuring a routing rule for the main application does not automatically apply to its helper processes. SplitTunnel does not automatically group these processes with their parent applications, as doing so could unintentionally disrupt system-critical traffic or shared services. You are responsible for identifying and configuring routing rules for each process you wish to control, and you may add processes manually if they are not automatically detected.
Misdirected Traffic
Due to the inherent limitations of per-application routing on macOS — including shared system services, independent helper processes, pre-established connections, cached DNS results, and UDP-based protocols such as QUIC and WebRTC — SplitTunnel cannot guarantee that all traffic from a given application will be routed as configured. You acknowledge and accept that some traffic may not follow your configured routing rules. We are not responsible or liable for any consequences arising from misdirected, misrouted, or unrouted traffic, including but not limited to IP address exposure, data transmitted over an unintended network path, or failure to route traffic through your VPN.
User Responsibility
You are solely responsible for configuring and verifying your routing rules. SplitTunnel provides tools to manage per-application routing, but the correctness and completeness of your configuration is your responsibility. You should independently verify that your traffic is being routed as intended, particularly for security-sensitive or privacy-sensitive use cases.

Disclaimer of Warranties
SplitTunnel is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that:
- •
The software will be compatible with all VPN providers
- •
The software will be uninterrupted or error-free
- •
The software will meet your specific requirements
- •
All application traffic will be routed as configured, due to shared system services, independent application processes, or other operating system behavior beyond our control
- •
The software will prevent any particular traffic from being exposed to any particular network path
We are not responsible for issues caused by your VPN provider, network configuration, third-party software, macOS system behavior, shared system services, or independent application helper processes. You acknowledge that per-application routing operates within the constraints of the macOS operating system and that certain traffic is inherently outside the scope of per-application control.
Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claims arising from your use of SplitTunnel is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.
We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to lost profits, data loss, business interruption, privacy breaches, or IP address exposure.
Without limiting the foregoing, we are not responsible or liable for any consequences arising from traffic that is misdirected, misrouted, or not routed as configured, whether due to shared macOS system services, independent application helper processes, pre-established connections, protocol behavior (including UDP, QUIC, and WebRTC), DNS caching, or any other factor outside the direct control of the software. You assume all risk associated with configuring and relying on per-application routing rules.
